Referrer Guidelines 

 

Many GPs ask “when should we organise a scan” or ”when should we refer”. We have therefore put together some referral guidelines to assist: 

​

BACK OR NECK PAIN WITH SCIATICA OR RADICULOPATHY  

 

MRI SCAN IF: 

• leg or arm pain not improving 

• significant weakness 

• symptoms of cauda equina dysfunction (urgent) 

• history of cancer 

• symptoms suggestive of infection (urgent) 

 

REFER IF: 

• Significant arm or leg pain or weakness

• suspected cauda equina syndrome (extremely urgent- send referral and call rooms) 

• suspected spinal abscess (extremely urgent- send referral and call rooms) 

• suspected or proven tumour 

·       Persistent neck or back pain 

 

 

BRAIN TUMOURS 

Any intracranial pathology, refer for MRI scan, send referral and call rooms. We will aim to see them urgently.
